I fell in love with this book. David Suzuki has a way with words and nature and has blended the two beautifully. The story of life....all life is what I found when reading about our trees...the trees that care about one another and provide such life sustaining elements to all that are near and far. This book helped awaken a deep sense of gratefulness within me....and so I now touch trees and thank them for the gifts they give so abundantly. Muir Woods in Northern California is my all time favorite place to be with them.

Tree A Life Story David Suzuki Wayne Grady Robert Bateman 9781553650164 Books Reviews

The information was interesting, but contained a little less science and a little more observation than I expected.
A great read for anyone wanting a book that allows them to gain a personal connection.
This is an excellent book that actually explains how a tree works - an explanation that is not easy to find. It is beatifully written and not too technical. I bought two extra copies for gifts. Informative and entertaining.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I spotted this book about trees at the local library. As curious as any future-environmentalist/botanist, I couldn't help but peruse the asthetically-pleasing book cover. The artwork and simple quote on the back cover conveyed this aura of mystery and reverance for it's subject that did not go unnoticed. I sensed that this was going to be far more than a bland book about trees. Intrigued, I borrowed it from the library.

After the assimilation of the very first chapter, I was hooked. I did not have within my capacity the strength to put the book down. Within mere hours, I devoured the entirety of the text, completely unaware that there was a world around me. It was so beautifully-written and in language that did not require a Ph.D in botany. This book opened up a world I never really had ever given much thought to. I can honestly say, that after reading this text, I will never be able perceive trees as these inanimate objects, fixed passively on this Earth.

This book is a must-read for everyone. It brings to light the magnificent power of nature whilst conveying this indescribable humility.

Seriously, read it. This book has definitely earned a place within my personal library.
My great interest in the subject lead me to buy this, I'd seen it quoted in other books. Now I find that David Suzuki has a wealth of information on the natural world. I'm reading Tree A life story for the second time. Lots and lots of detail, and yet an overview of The Tree in it's place in the natural world.
The description of the incredible complexity in how a single plant functions, from the seed through it's life, and also how that single plant interacts with the soil, the organisms in the soil, and the related plants, is amazing. We have bought several of these books and given them to friends.
David Suzuki has always been one of my favorite documentarians, and he has excelled in this book. I have little time to read any longer, but bought it because I noticed, in addition, that the sketches were done by Robert Bateman, an exceptionally talented artist specializing in dramatic, gorgeous and technically exquisite paintings and art. So now I am doubly hooked, for this book is as delightful as any of Suzuki's other works. The concept is creative, and the two chapters I have managed since it was delivered were his usual caliber.
My thanks to the company I bought it from. Other than a little sticky dirt on the back where a tag was removed, it was in mint condition, and even included, to my delight, a hand-signed card from Dr. Suzuki. I am totally content with quality of book and quality of seller, and look forward to stolen moments to read and reread this lovely volume.
