Defiance Beyond the Wall Volume 2 Lucas Bale 9781503138087 Books
Defiance isn't really a sequel to The Heretic but takes place a little after it ends. It has a new set of characters and new worlds as its setting. It is gritty like the first one, where the future of humanity is a regression to a more brutal time with tyranny, poverty, and suffering. A brutal government called the Magistratus rules all humanity. Weaver is an agent of the government, tracking down a killer. Natasha is a drug-addicted navigator who barely gets by. She is the top suspect in the murder. The two find themselves in the middle of a big conspiracy somehow centered on the events on the planet Herse in the first boom. The connection is tenuous at best, which was frustrating. It was hard to tell where the story was going especially with three different plots moving at once. There was also some dull bits of background that I e des up skipping over. Not as good as Heretic but still enjoyable.

I do realize that this "trilogy" is referred to as a "Space Opera" but to actually structure the story as one would an actual soap opera is really tiresome.
Although I hate the designation of "space opera" in general, this series seems to switch from that to hard core syfy several times in just one paragraph, sometimes in one sentence. The story drew me in so completely that if there were typos, I didn't notice them.
This series is well written, and captures the characters point of view so well, it's as if you are listening to their thoughts. There are great elements of hard sci-fi and the origin for the setting really sets up the story. It's easy to believe this series is a glimpse into mankind's future...
Defiance is the author's second book in the Beyond the Wall series and it surprised me in a couple ways. First, I purchased it immediately after reading the Heretic, anxiously waiting to see where Shepherd and Jordi were heading, only to be introduced to three other characters to follow. Second, I didn't mind.
Yes, there are other characters, but trust me on this, it works, and it works well. Each of the characters we've come to know in both of these books are rich and diverse and I'm in great anticipation of how Bale will bring all of these into one literary stew.
Defiance is definitely an exception to the "sequel letdown" rule, and instead leaves us begging for more! It is "space opera", combining the romance of the 50's & 60' golden age, with the razor edge tech of contemporary Sci-Fi.
Instead of bright & shiny, chrome plated scenery, surrounding cookie-cutter characters, Bale's universe is a rather a gritty, somewhat dark environment. The characters are well developed, some that you love and others you will loath, but in either case their reality shines through!
I thoroughly enjoyed Lucas Bale's "Defiance" and anxiously await the release of volume 3!!
Book 2 of the series introduces a whole new cast and places them in intriguing and dangerous positions. We hear very little about Shepherd and the preacher, about Herse and its escapees. There is just enough though to link the stories together and have you craving the third book! This second installment brings a little more action and surprise especially in the last third of the book. The scenes in aboard a mysterious vessel took my memory back to the horrors glimpsed on the Event Horizon.
If you reads the first book keep going! If you have not read it yet do so!
Loved the first book in the series but liked this one even better! It's like watching a great movie - full of suspense and surprises and tons of heart-pounding action! But there is also depth to the characters - the author takes you beyond the surface to see their motivations and the experiences that have caused them to act the way they do. I like that he treats the reader with respect and makes us think rather than spelling everything out. I like the fact that I can not guess the ending - I hate predictable books. I did not want the book to end - and now I can't wait for the next book to come out!
