Dishonour Among Thieves The Luck Uglies Book 2 edition by Paul Durham Children eBooks

THE LUCK UGLIES by Paul Durham is one of the books you may have missed earlier in the year with the spring flood of new offerings. With the second book in this popular new middle-grade fantasy adventure trilogy coming out in March 2015, it’s time to catch up!

With elements of mystery, adventure, and monster thrills, tweens will quickly become absorbed in this fantasy world set in a medieval-style village. Both boys and girls alike will enjoy the intelligent writing and engaging characters. The short chapters move quickly as the story builds to an exciting climax that involves intriguing monsters and a mysterious secret society.

Not your typical “good vs evil” storyline, this book will appeal to young readers who are beginning to explore the layers of life, power of secrets and fear, and the fine line between hero and villain.

Fans of Holly Black, Rick Riordan, and Brandon Mull will all enjoy this fantasy trilogy.

Dishonour Among Thieves The Luck Uglies Book 2 edition by Paul Durham Children eBooks Reviews

Plucky heroine Rye O'Chanter returns with her friends to foil villainous plots, uncover mysteries, and save the day. It's a terrific series for kids of ALL ages! Funny and wise.
Enjoyed getting to know more about the family origins of Rye O'Chanter and her escapades because of the Luck Uglies. I love that Rye is such a strong character despite being of an age that she still is uncertain of all that she is or will be. It is great to have any sort of female role model but one that young adults can cheer on helps make this a really fun read.
This is a great book. My kids and I read the first in the series and loved it. This one, they couldn't wait till storytime. They were ready and waiting on me. And impatient - if allowed would want to read the entire book in one sitting. I would highly recommend this book...adventure, great characters, great plot. My kids' description....awesome. We are currently reading the third in the series.
Wonderful. Well written, exciting, and just plain fun to read. Great characters, with fantastical names but human hearts, both good and evil. Adventure on every page, with a young heroine who is not afraid to fight for what she believes in. Her friends and family are similarly brave, true and resourceful in the face of great challenges.
All the very best ingredients for a truly great story.
It may be geared toward the younger set, but as a 68 year old grandma, I really did enjoy this book..It took me away from the WWII era books I have been soaking in this summer and gave me a change from the usual Romance ( i know where this is going) books that i read for fun.. I enjoyed Rye immensely and especially loved all the colorful characters in this book..If you are looking for something different, this is it! Medieval Times, ghostly alleys, weird characters, secrets and Bog Noblins...what more can you ask for to pass the time...Have to read book two now.
When I read the first chapter I was not hooked. But somewhere along the way I had trouble putting the book down, maybe it was around chapter three, but eventually the story grabbed me pulled me in completely. Even for a middle grade book, I really enjoyed reading it as an adult.

Quality characters, especially interaction is one thing I look for in a good story. Is it real or over the top. For example they never trust each other not matter how many times they have saved each others lives, because they lied once years ago, or are currently holding the truth back. Or how about the witty character that is constantly dishing out those zingers. In the Luck Uglies, these characters are true to life (well except maybe for Harmless' fighting ability, but he's a hero, I think). Some of the characters are both good and bad. Our hero isn't perfect and some of the "bad people" aren't all bad either. I appreciated the struggle between right and wrong.

They have secrets, which actually make the story better. Everything is not explained when introduced, but rather gradually over the coarse of the story we learn more and more. On the other hand, no one whines that they are not told everything and no one is harmed by the keeping of the secrets. There is no lofty I know but can't tell you for your own good either. There is no reason to know, just yet and all will be explained in perfect timing. The author keeps us on the edge of our seat, slowing letting the story unfold and sharing the secrets and bringing us into the lives of those in the story at a good steady pace.

Characters grow in this story. Even though the story takes place over a short period of time, there is talk of how someone changed. We get a small glimpse into how the main character changes at the very end of the book. We also see the struggle of others as they work to do what is right.

The book is self contained. You don't have to read the second book to find out what happens. The story ends, but you know there will be more adventures and will be anxious to read and learn more about this amazing place.

There has been comments about the bad behavior of Rye. While Rye is not a model child, she is still a good kid. She makes some bad choices and suffers no real consequences for those bad choices. Yet at the end of the book she has to make some tough choices and actually disobeys her parent, yet I would say she made the right choice in that case. I think the book is realistic in the way Rye behaved and appreciate a flawed character. I was actually more troubled by the lie that Rye's mother told in the beginning of the book when she said that Rye had been with her all day. But this gives us opportunity to discuss with our children about right, wrong, and the choices we must make. I have encouraged my 10 year old daughter to read this book.
I loved this book! Read it in one night...and wow, am I tired. I loved the originality. The author didn't stick with the traditional fairies and wizards. I enjoyed reading further and further to find out just who exactly the Luck Uglies were. Good or bad? Right or wrong? Somewhere in between maybe? There was a bit of a drawn out bit when everyone was attacking everyone (I won't go into more detail, I don't want to spoil the story for you!), but that soon passed when all the explanations finally came. The ending was mildly mysterious, so I am hoping there will be more Luck Ugly stories to come. And last, but certainly not least, the art was beautiful at the beginning of each chapter. It captured almost exactly what was in my mind's eye, and when it didn't, it gave me a different perspective on how others pictured the characters and scenarios. I hope to find more of his art in other books to come. All in all, a great read for anyone 10-100 years old who enjoys fantasy books.
