A Fierce and Subtle Poison Samantha Mabry Books
A Fierce and Subtle Poison sounded like it was going to be an interesting, unique, and exciting read. Sadly, it was only one of those things. Lucas knows all about the cursed house at the end of Calle Sol. And yet, he and the girl he’s interested in go there anyway, have a little fun, then go home. Well, Lucas makes it home, but Marisol disappears only to have her body washed up on the beach. Then her little sister goes missing while looking for her. This isn’t the first time this has happened, and Lucas knows it has something to do with the scientist and his cursed daughter.I loved the idea of a mad scientist, his poisonous daughter, and their cursed house, but of course, that’s not what A Fierce and Subtle Poison ended up being about exactly. Yes, Lucas goes to Isabel for answers about the missing and dead girls. Yes, she knows. Yes, she’s poisonous. Yes, her father might have a screw loose. But the story never really went anywhere for me. It seemed like most of the middle was just about Lucas trying to find little Celia, whom I did not care about at all. I had no reason to care that she was missing, other than she was just a little girl, which clearly makes me a monster.
I’m not really sure what else I can say about A Fierce and Subtle Poison. It just wasn’t the story for me. It’s not bad, just not my thing. I was hoping for more of a focus on Lucas and Isabel, since he’s the first person she seems to have reached out to, but there wasn’t much of that at all. In fact, they don’t get along all that well, and Isabel wasn’t nearly as interesting as the stories made her out to be (which I did expect to be the case, but still).

A Fierce and Subtle Poison Samantha Mabry Books Reviews
Mystical, moving and lyrical, an enchanting tale about a boy who wants to be a hero and a mythical girl who refuses to be saved.
I wouldn't call it great literature but it's a perfectly cromulent plane type read. It entertained me as long as I didn't think too hard about it.
This intricately woven narrative was rich and creative. I found myself wanting to stop reading but completely unable to do so. I would read more from this author.
Wasn't my favorite, but it also wasn't the worst. The beginning was intriguing, but I found myself having to reread a lot towards the end because everything happened so fast, I couldn't keep up. Relationships between the characters weren't well developed, ie falling in love after one make out session. Would have liked more character building.
I loved the concept of this book. I was thinking/hoping this might be a modern, lighter take on the styles of Allende or Marquez. Instead, it's just a bit clumsy and contrived. I have to say I didn't make it very far, which is rare for me. I'll try to pick it back up another time, but for now I have to say this is one of the most disappointing book purchases I've made in quite some time.
I read this book with the girls at work, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I spend through it, and it was a wonderful foil to the crime/murder mystery things we had been reading. It was hard to predict, but kept me wanting to know what came next through the end. Read it! Fast and fun read!
*4.5 stars*
This book is amazing! I loved the magical and heady atmosphere of Puerto Rico. It's also a reimagining of "Rappaccini's Daughter" by Hawthorne and the magical realism aspect was really well done. It's also nice to read from a male character's POV as he navigates not only where he feels like he belongs, his rocky relationship with his dad and girls who are disappearing. If you love magical realism and prefer writing style over just a fast paced book, this will be really satisifying )
What can I say about this book that hasn’t already been said? Ultimately I enjoyed the book though it did have some faults. SPOILERS AHEAD.
I found it irritating that there was very little character development, the character whom I feel was the most carefully constructed was Lucas’ father who also had a major shift mid-story for no apparent reason I.e. the cops are calling me to say my son tripped over a dead body? I’ll respond with a cold, distant “we’ll talk later” and then the talk never happened. What?! But my son seems like he’s not feeling well at breakfast?! Brace for the outpouring of tender gestures! Nope. Made no sense to me. Perhaps the most underdeveloped characters were Lucas and Isabelle’s mothers. You’re honestly telling me neither of them have mothers and neither mother has reached out to them? Ok, sure. But we know almost nothing of Lucas’ mother and I feel like that left a big gap at least for me. He doesn’t like to talk about it and this somehow also apparently stops him from ever musing about it either. The backstory of Lucas’ mother ultimately leaving is so rushed it didn’t read well. Isabelle’s situation I understand more, however, I was still left with a lot of questions. What happened to her after she left? Did she not try to use her power to help her child? Why?
I did truly enjoy the magical realism and that was what salvaged the book for me despite plenty of gaps of its own. Surely Isabelle encountered these other magical beings during her time at the field labs right? We were there for roughly 10 minutes and Lucas saw one, Celia was very aware of them and obviously made it a point to greet them, yet it was never discussed further than being mentioned in passing.
When it comes down to it this book was a nice way to spend a few hours, if a sequel ever came along I would read it in the hopes that it patched up some of the lingering questions I have.
